Genghis Cohen
Genghis Cohen is a storied Los Angeles institution that blends New York–style Chinese-American comfort food with a rich legacy in live entertainment and neighborhood culture. Founded in 1983 by NYC music producer Allan Rinde, the restaurant brought beloved East Coast Chinese classics west, becoming known for signature dishes like house-made egg rolls, Crackerjack shrimp, and the Kanton Knish—alongside “Foo Foo” cocktails and lantern-lit interiors.

Since 2015, under restaurateurs Marc Rose and Med Abrous, Genghis Cohen has preserved its nostalgic charm while elevating the bar program, live music, and design—complete with neon signage, oversized fish tanks, and theatrical booth seating. Now entering a pivotal chapter, the restaurant is demonstrating both resilience and adaptability. Following a lease-driven move from its home of 42 years, leadership executed a seamless transition to a nearby temporary space, maintaining dine-in, delivery, and an expanded bar offering. With plans for a new permanent location featuring a dedicated music venue, Genghis Cohen is leveraging its loyal, multi-generational following and cultural cachet to preserve operations, expand revenue, and position itself as a rare asset in LA’s experiential dining scene.
